Choosing a Franco chain comes down to the width, the line it's made in, the metal, and how you'll wear it. Here's what you need to know about each one.
What makes a Franco chain different?
A Franco is built from V-shaped links that interlock on four sides, so the chain is rounded instead of flat. That rounded profile is why it feels so good on the neck, and why a pendant slides along it freely. It's one of the most popular chains for wearing a pendant.
What does diamond cut mean?
Diamond cut means the links are cut with tiny flat facets, so the chain throws light from every angle. The name comes from the diamond-tipped tools used to cut those facets, not from diamonds set in the chain. Think of a smooth silver globe next to a disco ball: the facets are what make the difference. Neither style is better than the other; it comes down to how much sparkle you want.
Franco or Miami Cuban?
Both start from the classic curb link. A Franco is rounder and more flexible, and it's the better choice if you'll wear a pendant. A Miami Cuban is flatter and chunkier, lies flat on the chest, and works best when the chain itself is the statement.
Which width is right for you?
Width changes the look and the weight more than anything else. Here's what our 14k chains weigh at 22 inches:
1.5mm to 2mm: 6 to 12.5 grams. Subtle, and right for a small pendant.
2.5mm to 3mm: 17.8 to 27.5 grams. The everyday width, with or without a pendant.
4mm to 4.5mm: 36.4 to 53.4 grams. The classic men's Franco, with real weight on the neck, and still easy to wear every day.
5mm to 7mm: the chain becomes the statement. Going from 4mm to 5mm adds about two thirds more gold: in 18k at 22 inches, our 4mm weighs 56 grams and our 5mm 93.5 grams.
USA-made or Italian?
We offer two lines. Our USA-made Franco chains run from 1.5mm to 4.5mm, and our Italian line includes our widest chains. Both share a similar structure and the same great quality. The Italian chains cost more because of higher labor costs and, currently, import tariffs. Same width doesn't always mean same weight: at 22 inches, our USA-made 4mm in 14k weighs 36.4 grams and our Italian 4mm 48.5 grams.
Gold or platinum?
14k gold is often a little harder and handles everyday knocks well. 18k and 22k carry more gold and a deeper yellow. Our guide to 14k vs 18k gold explains the difference.
White gold chains are rhodium plated for a bright white finish.
Platinum is naturally white and much heavier: our 4mm platinum Franco weighs 76 grams at 22 inches. See all platinum chains.
Length, pendants and clasps
Our Franco chains come in lengths from 20 to 28 inches, and most men choose 22 or 24 inches. Several of our chains can be ordered with one of our Signature Clasps, cast in the same metal as the chain, and every Proclamation pendant fits over them. Not sure about your length? Our guide on how to measure your neck for the perfect chain walks you through it.
Solid, stamped and covered
Every Franco chain here is solid gold or solid platinum, never hollow or semi-solid, and stamped with its hallmark on the clasp. Each product page lists the weight for every length; listed weights can vary slightly, usually by up to about 4%. Every chain is covered by our Lifetime Limited Warranty. See our returns and warranty policy for the details.
Frequently Asked Questions
A diamond cut Franco chain is a Franco chain whose V-shaped links are cut with small flat facets, using diamond-tipped tools, so it sparkles from every angle. The Franco link interlocks on four sides, which makes the chain rounded, flexible and well suited to wearing a pendant.
Neither is better; they do different jobs. A Franco is rounder and more flexible, so it's the better choice for a pendant. A Miami Cuban is flatter and chunkier, and it's the better choice when the chain is the whole look.
Yes. Every Franco chain on this page is solid 14k, 18k or 22k gold or solid platinum, never hollow or semi-solid and never gold plated, and each one is stamped with its hallmark on the clasp.
A Franco chain packs a lot of metal into its width, because its links interlock on four sides. The price comes down to how much gold or platinum is in the chain, its karat, and where it's made. Every chain lists its weight for each length, so you can compare what you're paying for.
For a pendant, 2mm to 4mm is the sweet spot. On its own, 4mm to 5mm is the classic everyday Franco, and 6mm and up makes a statement. At 22 inches, our 14k chains weigh about 12.5 grams at 2mm and 36.4 to 48.5 grams at 4mm.
Yes. A solid Franco is a strong chain for daily wear: its links interlock on four sides, and ours are solid metal all the way through, never hollow. That's also why it carries a pendant well.
