What a St. Michael pendant really means, what every detail on the medal stands for, and how to pick the right metal, size and chain.

The sterling silver Champion Saint Michael pendant on a chain: St. Michael with wings spread, a sword raised and a shield, standing over the serpent

So you've got your eye on a St. Michael pendant, and you want to know what it really means before you put it on. Fair enough. Here's the St. Michael pendant meaning in one sentence: it's a reminder that God protects His people, and that you're expected to stand up for what's right, even when it costs you something. It's for those that run towards the sound of danger in the name of justice, not away from it.

That's the big picture. But there's a lot packed into one small medal, and every detail on it means something. So let's go through it piece by piece, and then talk about how to pick the right metal, size and chain for you.

You will learn:

What Does a St. Michael Pendant Mean?

A St. Michael pendant stands for protection, courage and humility, and all three come straight out of the Bible. That's a big part of why men of faith have been wearing his medal for centuries.

Start with protection. In the Book of Daniel, Michael is called "the great prince who protects your people." Then there's courage. In the Book of Revelation, Michael doesn't negotiate with evil; he fights it, and he wins.

Humility is the one that surprises people. Michael's name is actually a question: "Who is like God?" And the answer is nobody. Not the devil, not Michael, and not us either.

Now, one thing a St. Michael pendant is NOT: a lucky charm. It doesn't work like a force field, and the Catholic Church itself teaches that treating a medal that way is superstition. It's a sign of your faith and a daily reminder of the man you strive to be. That's plenty.

Who Is St. Michael?

St. Michael is an archangel, and he's the only angel the Bible actually calls by that title. He was never a man; the "Saint" in front of his name is a title of honor. He shows up by name in three books of the Bible, and each one tells you something different about him. (We're quoting the NIV translation here.)

In Daniel 10, a messenger from heaven gets held up for 21 days until "Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me." Two chapters later, in Daniel 12:1, he's "the great prince who protects your people." That's Michael the protector.

In Jude 1:9, Michael is arguing with the devil himself, and even then he doesn't trade insults. He says, "The Lord rebuke you!" Think about that for a second. Even an archangel, one of heaven's chief princes, doesn't lean on his own authority. He leans on God's.

And then there's the big one, Revelation 12:7-8: "Then war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the dragon, and the dragon and his angels fought back. But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven." That's the scene on most St. Michael medals, ours included.

Watch how we make our gold Champion St. Michael pendant, from that story to the finished piece:

If you want to go deeper on the scripture, we wrote a whole article on Saint Michael the Archangel.

What Does "Quis ut Deus" Mean?

"Quis ut Deus" is Latin for "Who is like God?" It's the meaning of Michael's name in Hebrew (Mi-ka-el), and it's written on a banner on the back of our St. Michael pendant.

Tradition says it was Michael's battle cry when the devil was thrown out of heaven. The Bible doesn't record Michael saying anything in Revelation 12, so that part comes from tradition rather than scripture, but you can see why it stuck. In Christian tradition, the devil's whole problem was pride: he wanted to be like God. Michael's name answers him with a question.

What's on a St. Michael Pendant, Front and Back?

The front of our St. Michael pendant shows Michael defeating the devil in the form of the serpent, and the back carries his emblems: a shield and cross, the scales of justice, and the meaning of his name. Here's something most people don't know, though: the Bible tells you what Michael did, but it never tells you what he looked like. No armor, no sword, no scales. Christian artists filled in those details over hundreds of years, kind of like a war story that got passed down without any photos.

That doesn't make the details any less meaningful. Here's how to read every one of them on the Champion Saint Michael pendant we make here at Proclamation Jewelry.

Front of the sterling silver Champion Saint Michael pendant: Michael with wings spread and a halo, a sword raised and a shield on his arm, standing over a coiled serpent inside a border of rays

The front of the Champion Saint Michael pendant in sterling silver.

On the front, Michael stands over a serpent with his wings spread and a halo behind his head. He's got a sword raised in one hand and a shield on his other arm.

  • The serpent is the devil. Revelation 12:9 calls him "that ancient serpent," which ties him back to the serpent in the Garden of Eden. So whether a medal shows a serpent or a dragon, it's the same enemy.
  • The sword is the fight against evil from Revelation 12.
  • The shield is protection. Ephesians 6:16 calls faith a shield that can extinguish "all the flaming arrows of the evil one."
  • The border around the scene is made to look like rays of light, like the sun coming through, or an angel's glow.

Back of the sterling silver Champion Saint Michael pendant: a shield with a cross at its center, a scale pan hanging on each side, and a banner reading Quis ut Deus

The back of the pendant, with the shield, the scales and the "Quis ut Deus" banner.

On the back, you'll find Michael's shield with a cross in the middle, scales on either side of it, and a banner underneath that reads "Quis ut Deus."

  • The shield and cross stand for faith as your protection, and the victory of the cross over fear.
  • The scales stand for justice. In old paintings of the Last Judgment, Michael is the one weighing souls. (Again, that one comes from art, not from a Bible verse.)
  • The banner spells out what his name means: "Who is like God?"

On the gold version, the ring of light around the front is plated in white rhodium, so it really pops against the yellow gold.

Who Wears a St. Michael Pendant?

St. Michael is the saint of men who protect other people: cops, soldiers, paratroopers and first responders all claim him. If your job is running toward danger while everyone else runs away, he's your saint, and each group came to him a little differently.

Pope Pius XII officially named him patron of Italy's State Police back in 1949, and police officers all over the world look to him too. Soldiers have looked to him for centuries; in the Middle Ages he was the patron of the orders of knights. French paratroopers took him as their patron in the 1940s (an army chaplain formally proposed him in 1945), and the US 82nd Airborne calls him the airborne community's patron saint. These days, he's become a patron for first responders in general.

Quick correction to something you'll see all over the internet: St. Michael isn't the traditional patron saint of firefighters. That's St. Florian. Plenty of firefighters wear St. Michael anyway.

But you don't need a badge to wear one. A lot of men wear St. Michael as a reminder to protect their family and to stand for what's right. It also makes a great gift for:

  • A guy graduating from the police academy, or deploying with the military
  • Confirmation, if he picked Michael as his confirmation saint
  • A new dad (that's when the protector role gets very real)
  • A friend going through a hard season, as a reminder that he's not fighting alone

If you're Catholic, you probably know the Prayer to Saint Michael, which starts, "Saint Michael the Archangel, defend us in battle." Pope Leo XIII added it to the prayers after Low Mass in 1886, and in 2018 Pope Francis asked Catholics around the world to end the Rosary with it.

St. Michael or St. Christopher?

St. Christopher protects you on the road, and St. Michael protects you in the fight. That's the easy way to tell the two apart.

St. Christopher is the patron saint of travelers. The legend says he carried a child across a dangerous river and found out he was carrying Christ. So if you're a pilot, a trucker, or you basically live in airports, St. Christopher is the one for you. If your life feels more like a daily battle to do the right thing, go with St. Michael.

And plenty of guys wear both. Here's our guide to the St. Christopher pendant if you want to compare.

Which Metal Should You Choose?

At Proclamation Jewelry, our St. Michael pendant comes in sterling silver, 14k gold, 18k gold and platinum, and the design is the same in all of them. What changes is the color, the price, and the weight. With these metals, the weight difference is bigger than most guys expect.

Metal Small (21mm) Medium (25mm) Large (30mm)
Sterling silver 5.5 grams 8.5 grams 11.5 grams
14k yellow gold 8 grams 12 grams 17 grams
18k yellow gold 10 grams 14.5 grams 20.5 grams
Platinum 13 grams 23 grams 27.5 grams

Pro Tip: A US nickel weighs 5 grams. So the silver medium weighs less than two nickels, and the platinum medium weighs about four and a half. You'll feel that difference every time it moves on your chest.

Sterling silver is the lightest and the most affordable. It's a great everyday piece, the kind you put on in the morning and forget about. Silver does tarnish over time, so give it a wipe now and then with the polishing cloth that comes in the box. Check out the sterling silver St. Michael pendant.

14k or 18k gold? 18k is 75% pure gold, so the yellow is deeper and richer. 14k is 58.3% gold, which makes it harder and better at handling daily knocks. Neither one is necessarily better; it comes down to whether you care more about color or toughness. Here's the gold St. Michael pendant.

Platinum is 95% pure, naturally white, and never needs plating. It's also the heaviest of the four by a mile: the medium weighs 23 grams, almost three times the silver one. If you want a piece that feels serious in your hand, this is it. Take a look at the platinum St. Michael pendant.

Let's be real about the cheap ones, too. A $30 "gold" St. Michael necklace isn't solid gold. Most of them are gold-plated brass or stainless steel, and the color can wear through over time. Solid gold is gold all the way through, and the weight gives it away: our medium in 14k weighs about 12 grams.

Buying it as a gift? Silver usually ships from stock, but gold and platinum are typically made to order, which takes 3 to 4 weeks. Plan ahead if you've got a date in mind.

What Size Should You Get?

The St. Michael pendant comes in three sizes: small (21mm), medium (25mm) and large (30mm). That's the width of the medal itself. With the bail on top, the small is 32mm long, the medium is 38mm and the large is 44mm.

Pro Tip: Grab a coin. The small is about the size of a nickel, the medium is a little bigger than a quarter, and the large is close to a half dollar. Hold the coin against your chest in the mirror and you'll know pretty quickly which one is you.

Here's a good rule of thumb:

  • Small: if you want to wear it under your shirt, or you've got a slimmer build
  • Medium: if you want it to show at an open collar. It's the safe middle, and it shows off the detail of the scene really well
  • Large: if you're a bigger guy, or you want to wear it over your shirt. We recommend a chain of 3.5mm or wider

Buying one for a woman? Go with the small on a 2mm or 3mm chain.

What Chain Goes With a St. Michael Pendant?

Match the chain width to the size of the pendant. Every size has its own bail opening (the loop the chain goes through), and these are the widths that fit and look right:

Pendant size Bail opening Chain width
Small (21mm) 7 x 7mm 2mm, 3mm or 3.5mm
Medium (25mm) 7.5 x 8.5mm 3mm, 3.5mm or 4mm
Large (30mm) 8.5 x 9mm 3.5mm, 4mm or 5mm

For gold, we like diamond cut franco chains and diamond cut rope chains with a pendant. They're strong, they've got a rounded profile, and they let the pendant move around freely instead of getting stuck.

Pro Tip: The majority of men of average height and stature choose 22" or 24". A 22" chain keeps the medal a little higher, so it's more likely to show at an open collar. A 24" chain drops it about an inch lower (the extra 2 inches are split between both sides of the chain), so it's easier to keep under your shirt. Not sure? Measure around your neck and add about 2 inches, like we explain in our guide on how to measure your neck for the perfect chain length. If it's a gift and you don't know his neck size, start with 22" or 24", the lengths most men choose.

One more thing: we'd keep the chain and the pendant in the same metal. It looks more finished, and two different metals rubbing together all day can wear the softer one down over time. Whatever size you choose, we carry chains in a recommended width in all three metals: silver chains, gold chains and platinum chains.

Can You Wear It Every Day?

Yes, you can wear a St. Michael pendant every day. Solid silver, gold and platinum are made to be worn every day. Just take it off before you work out, shower or swim, as our cleaning guide recommends (chlorine in pools and hot tubs is rough on silver and gold), and give it a wipe with the polishing cloth when it starts to look dull. Our at-home jewelry cleaning guide covers the rest.

Every St. Michael pendant ships in a matte black display box with a leather pouch and a large polishing cloth, and the gold and platinum ones also come with a certificate of authenticity. Want an engraving on the gold or platinum version? Use the "Customize This Design" button on the product page to ask our team. Just know that engraved pieces are final sale, per our returns and warranty policy, which also covers our Lifetime Limited Warranty.

FAQ

What does it mean when someone gives you a St. Michael necklace?

A St. Michael necklace given as a gift means the giver is trusting you to God's protection, and sees the courage in you. It's often given at a big moment, like graduating from the academy, deploying, confirmation or becoming a dad.

Can you wear a St. Michael pendant if you're not Catholic?

Yes, anyone can wear a St. Michael pendant. Michael is in the Bible (Daniel, Jude and Revelation), and Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran churches all keep a feast day for him. If your church doesn't pray to saints, you can wear it as a reminder of what the Bible says about him.

Is Archangel Michael the same as Jesus?

No. Catholic and Orthodox teaching, and most Protestant traditions, treat Archangel Michael as an angel created by God, not as Jesus. Seventh-day Adventists and Jehovah's Witnesses are the main groups that believe Michael and Jesus are the same.

What is St. Michael the patron saint of?

St. Michael is honored as the patron saint of police officers (officially of Italy's State Police since 1949), and by tradition of soldiers and the sick. Paratroopers and first responders have adopted him too, but the traditional patron of firefighters is St. Florian.

Will a St. Michael pendant protect me?

A St. Michael pendant isn't a lucky charm, and the Catholic Church teaches that treating it like one is superstition. It's a sign of your faith in God's protection, and a reminder to live like it.

Does a St. Michael pendant need to be blessed?

A St. Michael pendant doesn't need to be blessed, but a lot of Catholics like to have a priest bless a religious medal before they wear it. Any priest can do it in a minute, so just ask after Mass.

When is St. Michael's feast day?

The Catholic Church celebrates St. Michael on September 29, along with the archangels Gabriel and Raphael (it's also known as Michaelmas). The Eastern Orthodox Church celebrates him on November 8 (November 21 on the civil calendar in Orthodox churches that keep the old Julian calendar).
